Review of 50:50 compilation @ Headphonenaughts Nanolog
50:50 is another fantastic collection of bleeding-edge electronic soundscapes and progressive ambience from Simian Shaun and his pals. Stand out tracks for me include ::
- Fossil by 4th Alternative :: more excellent ambience from my pal Rob. Fresh... New... Progressive... Atmospheric... Beautiful!
- Watersmouth by Clutter :: fantastic blend of electronics over found sounds... refreshing.
- Room 50 Hotel Ereso by Cousin Silas :: Wow! This is a track I have been fortunate to have for a while... Si passed a demo disk to me a while back... and this was a stand out track for me. More Tangerine Dream than his previous work... this has to be my favourite track of 2008 so far. The synths build into a hypnotic rythm that is just magical.
- Deka by Adrian Carter :: Simply a wonderful slice of techno. Energetic and imaginative. Awesome!
I am looking forward to digging into the other tracks... these were the ones that initally stood out for me... and I thank Rob, Shaun, Dave & Adrian respectively for making beautiful music!

We’ve just finished the current phase of Monkey Noises, our education programme, as part of our funding from the amazing Awards For All.
The funding has helped us work with young people in Cumbria to help them make soundscapes, produce music concrete compositions, try their hand at music re-mixing and express themselves through poetry and lyrics. To find out more visit the Monkey Noises page.
This project has also kindly been supported by Barrow Borough Council, Cumbria County Council, Word Market, St Bernards School, Age Concern Building Bridges Project, Cumbria Library Services and Forum Twenty Eight.
The young people’s work has been released on Earth Monkey Productions along the way and seen them sharing space with a host of international artists and receive radio play, been part of podcasts and seen reviews in the press and on the internet. We hope you enjoy the finished work as much as we all enjoyed making it. Our artists had the great pleasure of working with around 60 young people and 12 Building Bridges volunters on the project and would like to thank everyone for all their hard work.
Our Awards For All funding has also been used to help Cumbrian artists perform and network with national and international artists and develope their creative practice whilst giving them a platform to be seen by the public. This has been through the Open Circuit concerts that Earth Monkey has put on and has seen Earth Monkey artists play concert halls and festivals across the UK, which the Awards For All funding has helped market. The GNBN US tour is one of the great legacys of this phase as the link with Duet For Theremin & Lap Steel of Atlanta, who GNBN co-headlined the your with, was made when Duet were brought to Barrow as part of the Open Circuit series
The award has also helped Earth Monkey to market itself and has seen total visits and downloads of EMP related releases and sites rise from 94,480 to 472,018 (An amazing increase of 377,538) and making Earth Monkey one of the leading net labels with an international reputation.
So all in all a very sucessful project. We would like to thank Awards For All and all the organisations that supported this phase of our developement and are looking forward the next phase - so keep coming back for more Monkey magic
Shaun
